Every time I watch this episode I get a kick out of these two shots. For some reason, they just stand out. I think this happens more often than not with interaction between the Doctor and Amy, but framing shots of the two of them with Rory hovering in the background seems to be a pretty popular choice amongst DW directors. What’s interesting a bit about this scene is that River is now in the background of the Doctor’s shot, in the inverse position of Rory. Obviously the interaction here is between the two of them (River and Rory don’t have lines) so it makes sense narratively but the distance/angling suggests to me a pretty obvious effort to keep the other characters in the eyeline. By which I mean: it could be a coincidence, but I don’t think so. In the next cuts after these two shots, we go to close ups where River and Rory have been eliminated from the frame. This could be for a lot of reasons, but least likely is that whoever directed this episode is subliminally encouraging Eleven/Amy romantically. I think it serves as a reminder, however, of the Doctor/Companion relationship and how central that is to the show—even though series six is sort of a mess from many different angles, that relationship is still essential and important. And, cumulatively? Series six actually has quite a bit of the Doctor and Amy’s friendship. It’s seen in a much different way from series five, but it’s there. I’ll cite her interaction with the flesh Doctor, several scenes in a A Good Man Goes to War, The Girl Who Waited (primarily about Rory, but it’s not as if “I hate the Doctor” is an everyday statement from her), the train scene and the final scene of The Wedding of River Song, and most importantly, The God Complex, as examples of this. The Christmas special is technically series seven, but that last scene speaks volumes. You could argue that this is all moot because Rory is a companion too, but the Doctor and Rory’s interactions always center around Amy and she is the only thing they have in common (other ships aside, hem). Rory wouldn’t even be there if Amy weren’t. I suppose the point is that Doctor Who is fundamentally a story about a boy who takes a girl out to see the universe, and this scene is really quite brilliant because it reminds us of that, and sets the tone for Amy and the Doctor’s interaction throughout the rest of the series. It’s a reminder of what the show is, functionally, at its core.
